The human population today is the largest in history – about 7.5 billion, expected to increase to 9 billion in 2050.

Gaia and Nature’s Principles Basics for Life, Ecological Living and Education

We can be reasonably sure that if human kind had invested energies in formal or informal education for ecological wisdom, we would not have landed in this climate emergency which is even threatening human survival. It is essential that we learn about ecological processes and principles and how to apply these in every human endeavor. We also need to understand processes within the human mind – because the major human crises we face today are also crises of human perception.

As humans we are hard-wired to be preoccupied with

1. what is immediately around us and
2. what is of short term value to us.

Hence we neglect the larger, global issues such as the crises created by our globalised capitalist economic system or even give much thought to the fact that many human civilisations have perished before us on account of these same human frailties – short termism and the compulsion to gratify immediate needs.
